Azerbaijan
In 2005, LSU assessed food safety systems and government regulations; program ongoing through a local partnership.

Armenia
LSU, with U.S. Dept. of Agriculture funds, assessed food safety systems and its government policy framework and is implementing a food safety assistance program to support government agencies and the industry.

Belize
Working with Southern University, LSU carried out the Belize Livestock Development Project to improve production and expand product markets for its small and medium livestock producers.

Cameroon
LSU collaborated with Southern University to assist in the establishment of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Yaounde; LSU has a general exchange agreement with University of Yaounde .

Democratic Republic of the Congo
In 1990, LSU collaborated with the South East Consortium for International Development (SECID), Southern University, and other agricultural research institutions to focus on production of maize, cassava, and legumes.

Egypt
LSU conducted rice storage, drying, and processing programs in the 1990s, mainly for rice industry personnel; LSU also has an exchange agreement with Future University in Egypt.

Georgia
In 2005, LSU assessed food safety systems and government regulations; program ongoing through a local partnership.

Ghana
Funded by the USDA/FAS, this project supports the USAID/Ghana Mission Economic Growth (EG) office by providing Ghana program management and technical services that contribute to their economic growth, agriculture and food security activities.

Guyana
Under U.S. government auspices, LSU helped develop a rice research center and a marketing program for small rice farmers over a two-year period. In this effort, LSU provided teams of agronomists, plant pathologists, agricultural engineers, and economists, resulting in a rice research station being fully staffed by Guyanan agriculturists trained at LSU.

India
LSU implemented a four-year project (1960s) funded by the U.S. government to develop a rice postharvest training and extension center and to train specialists to M.S. level in rice drying, storage, and milling; with funding from the Ford Foundation assisted the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur to establish a Rice Process Engineering Center and facilitated the development of the school’s extension, education, and teaching program.

Indonesia
LSU, with U.S. government funds, brought 25 Indonesians to LSU to participate in 6 months of vocational training to learn the operation of mechanized equipment for small farm projects; with World Bank financing helped develop a program of rice production, processing, storage & seed distribution with new improved varieties; granted funds by USDA to address constraints to U.S. exports of technology to improve beef cattle production in East Java (1996-2005).

Iraq
LSU conducted rice storage, drying, and processing programs in the 1990s, mainly for rice industry personnel as a part of the USDA program offering technical support.

Ivory Coast
The LSU conducted rice storage, drying, and processing programs in the 1990s, mainly for rice industry personnel.

Jamaica
LSU, Supported by USAID/Jamaica from 1987 – 1993, collaborated with Southern University and Sam Houston State University to assist the Jamaica College of Agriculture in Portland Parish, Jamaica to increase the number and quality of graduates by providing faculty training at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels.

Liberia
From 1981 to 1985, LSU implemented agricultural research and extension; supplied consultants and participant training; LSU currently has an MOU with Cuttington University to facilitate collaboration in agricultural development and institutional capacity building. LSU collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture in articulating a Presidential Rice Initiative. LSU collaborated with Southern University to develop a strategic plan for Cuttington University and the University of Liberia to enhance their ability to train needed manpower for national food security.

Malaysia
LSU implemented a five-year project (1966-1970) to help establish the Malaysian College of Agriculture at Serdang (now the National Agricultural University); trained more than 1,000 students to undergraduate and post-graduate degrees at LSU. LSU has faculty and student exchange agreement with Kolej Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein onn Malaysia.

Mali
From 1982 to 1985, LSU, through the Agricultural Extension and Vocational Education Project, developed the U.S. government’s capacity to train agricultural technicians and to plan and administer technical training centers; in 2004-05 provided technical assistance in the production and processing of rice and in the use of rice hulls for energy.

Malawi
From 2007, LSU provided train-the-trainer and certificate training in food safety in Meat/Poultry and seafood, and training to producer groups in marketing and business planning.

Mozambique
From 2005, LSU provided basic and train-the-trainer food safety training in Meat/Poultry and Seafood, small grants and training to producer groups in marketing and business planning, and in-plant technical assistance to poultry processing plant owned by a local women’s cooperative. LSU has a general exchange agreement with Universidade Eduardo Mondlane.

Namibia
From 2005, LSU provided basic and train-the-trainer food safety programs in Meat/Poultry and Seafood, as well as small grants and training to producer groups in marketing and business planning.

Nicaragua
LSU implemented a 30-month training program at LSU in English language and undergraduate engineering; in the late 1960s, under contract with the US government for four years, LSU implemented a program of improvement of livestock marketing and horticultural efforts for small farmers; provided overall agricultural research development to the Nicaragua Ministry of Agriculture and met a wide range of agriculture needs ranging from livestock marketing, horticulture, and rice production/post production. Currently, LSU is implementing a food safety training program since 2005.

Senegal
In 1981, LSU led a rice research project in the lower Casamance Region working with Senegalese institutions; in 1989 subcontracted with Louis Burger Group on the Senegal Southern Zone Water Management Project that assisted rice farmers to reclaim lands lost to salinization.

Sierra Leone
In the 1980s, LSU implemented the Adaptive Crop Research and Extension Project—a four-year U.S. government-funded program with Southern University and the Agriculture Ministry—to provide improved seed and technology to farmers.

South Africa
Since 2005, LSU has been implementing a U.S. government-funded Food Industry Support Program to provide food safety training programs in Meat/Poultry &Seafood, and training to producer groups in marketing and business planning. LSU also has exchange agreements with Stellenbosch University & University of Pretoria.

Sri Lanka
LSU was granted U.S. government funding (1970s) for a 30-month program that assisted small farmers in saving rice harvest and marketing it for their best advantage while meeting consumer demands with constant supplies at reasonable prices.

Suriname
LSU conducted rice storage, drying and processing programs in the 1990s, mainly for rice industry personnel.

Thailand
Currently provides bio-security and bio-safety training and support for the construction of laboratories for animal disease identification and surveillance for the Royal Thai Government under U.S. Department of Agriculture auspices; LSU funded internships (2008) for students and alumni of Kasetsart University.

Togo
In 2008, LSU began a Private-Public Partnership program with U.S. government support to combat Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza through training in best management practices/ bio-security and social network development of the poultry value chain’s participants.

Trinidad and Tobago
LSU conducted rice storage, drying, and processing programs in the 1990s, mainly for rice industry personnel.

Ukraine
LSU granted U.S. government funds (2001) to assess food safety systems and government regulations; trained industry and government personnel; helped develop the International Institute for Food Safety and Quality, which has drafted food related legislation and new national food safety standards; and created (1998-2004) a private farmer assistance program through the establishment of extension methodology training in three provinces.

Venezuela
LSU played a key role in developing an agricultural college at Jusepin with funding from the Ford foundation and the U.S. government.

Vietnam
With USDA grant, LSU studied in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta to learn the potential of using rice husks for energy purposes (1997).

Zambia
In 2005, LSU provided basic and train-the-trainer food safety programs in Meat/Poultry and seafood, training to producer groups in marketing and business planning, and conducted a Private-Public-Partnership program to combat Avian Influenza from 2008-2009.
