In 2004, the United States government set up an electronic Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) in which all international students and exchange visitors must be registered. You must pay a fee, which is used to administer and maintain this system, before you make a visa appointment at the consulate or embassy.  Note: The SEVIS fee is different from visa fees. 

Some exchange visitors (J-1) who are in federally sponsored government programs (Fulbright, Institute of International Education, LASPAU, etc.) do not need to pay the fee.  You should receive information from your sponsor regarding the exemption.

How to pay:

You have several options to pay this fee:

1. Use a check or a money order, which must be drawn on a U.S. bank.
2. Use Western Union Quick Pay™.
3. Pay online with a credit card.
